The Colts have signed free agent defensive tackle Sheldon Day

INDIANAPOLIS — The Indianapolis Colts continue to add to their defensive interior.

One week after announcing the acquisition of All-Pro DeForest Buckner in a trade with the San Francisco 49ers, the Colts today announced they have signed free agent defensive tackle Sheldon Day. Terms of the deal weren’t immediately released.

Day, 25, who stands at 6-foot-1 and weighs 285 pounds, is a local product. An Indianapolis native, he played at Warren Central High School and was the runner-up for the 2011 Indiana Mr. Football award.

Day played collegiately at Notre Dame, and entered the league in 2016 as a fourth-round pick by the Jacksonville Jaguars. In 56 career games with two starts with the Jaguars (2016-17) and 49ers (2017-19), Day has accumulated 53 tackles (38 solo), 14.0 tackles for loss, 6.0 sacks and four passes defensed.

Day was also a key member of the 49ers’ postseason run in 2019, when they advanced all the way to Super Bowl LIV. He started all three of San Francisco’s playoff games last season, tallying three tackles (two solo) and 1.0 tackle for loss.

Day and Buckner’s acquisitions continue a clear focus up front for the Colts’ defense — particularly in the interior. The team now has plenty of depth at defensive tackle on its offseason roster, including Day, Buckner, Denico Autry, Tyquan Lewis and Grover Stewart.
