Seattle’s Dick’s Drive-In food truck announces surprising first stops; new restaurant location

Seattle’s Dick’s Drive-In food truck announces surprising first stops; new restaurant location

by Christina Ausley, Seattle P-I

Just a few weeks ago, Seattle’s beloved Dick’s Drive-In made a big announcement: its first food truck is on the way.

While the local chain for all things burgers and shakes plans to utilize the new truck to reach the entire region for those who don’t have easy access to their seven restaurants spread across Edmonds, Kent and Seattle, Washingtonians were invited to vote for which neck of the woods the truck would start doling out deluxe burgers and hand-whipped milkshakes first.

In a dramatic live Facebook event, the results rolled in this Sept. 30 just as Seattleites were warming their morning coffee – some of which, may have spat out their cup of Joe as the surprising results were announced.

The event narrowed things down to five finalists, five Washington cities who earned the most votes in achieving possibly one of the greatest things to happen in 2020: a drive-in that, quite literally, drives to you.

The five finalists were announced in reverse alphabetical order, with no indication as to which city earned the most or the least votes - only that they may indeed see a Dick's Drive-In food truck rolling about the streets. Just like we once rallied our spare change and sprinted out the door at the sound of an ice cream truck, so too will adults and children watch from their windows for the Dick's food truck.

The first finalist was that of West Seattle - a community which has likely watched its fellow Seattleites nosh on all things Deluxe burgers and floppy fries tearfully from afar, just out of Dick's reach, unless they're willing to make a little road trip out of it. “For the first time, West Seattle will have a dicks drive-in, at least from our food truck,” the broadcast announced.

The second finalist was that of Everett, followed by perhaps the most surprising finalist - Bellingham.

The second finalist was that of Everett, followed by perhaps the most surprising finalist – Bellingham.

“Western Washington University, there are many folks who would almost need a Dick’s Deluxe in their time of need at Western Washington University, and for the very first time in Bellingham you will be able to get that delicious, delectable, tasty Dick’s Deluxe in your hometown,” the broadcast announced dramatically. “We’re proud of you Bellingham, and we hope to see you as soon as we possibly can.”

The final city nabbing a top five position was significantly less surprising – Bellevue.

The Eastside has been without a Dick’s Drive-In for years, paying a (quite literal) bridge toll to nab a bag of late-night Dick’s. Now, they’ll see a truck rolling about their streets in the weeks ahead.

But just as the Facebook broadcast seemed to be settling down and Eastsiders shed a tear in the hopes of noshing on a nearby Dick's Deluxe burger soon, Dick's dropped yet another massive announcement.

“This isn’t the only announcement? Yes folks, what could be even bigger than a food truck? What could possibly be above the truck?” the broadcast teased. “Could it be a new location perhaps? Oh my goodness, yes, an Eastside location search!”

It's official: Dick's Drive-In is looking for a permanent Eastside property.

It’s official: Dick’s Drive-In is looking for a permanent Eastside property.

“A food truck is not enough,” the broadcast announced. “We are going to actually be bringing the Dick’s Drive-In that you love permanently to the Eastside, but we need your help.”

With the hopes of opening another Dick’s Drive-In location in the months ahead, the Dick’s team has also asked for a little more help than just a vote.
