Glickenhaus 004S edges closer to production with completion of first crash test

It’s been more than six months since the Scuderia Cameron Glickenhaus 004C race car made its debut at the 2020 24 Hours of Nürburgring, a grueling race in which the car managed to finish a respectable 14th overall.

Soon the company will debut the road-going version, the 004S. The road car has successfully completed the first of several punishing crash tests required for certification, and famous car detailer Ammo NYC has some footage of it. If you’re short for time, you’ll need to skip forward to the 14:19 mark for the start of the crash test footage. The specific test is a frontal impact at 30 mph.

Ammo NYC is working closely with Glickenhaus to develop some of the exterior finishes for the 004S. There will be exposed carbon fiber which buyers will be able to order with a tint, as well as matte and polished finishes.

According to Glickenhaus, production of the 004S will be able to commence shortly after the completion of all crash testing. The company currently estimates that orders placed today can be delivered by late 2021 or early the following year. Production is being handled at the company’s plant in Danbury, Connecticut.

Compared to the 004C race car, which has been developed to meet GT3 specifications, the 004S has a significantly milder aerodynamic setup though will still generate as much as 1,322 pounds of downforce at a speed of 186 mph. It also has fewer intakes, plus exhaust tips that exit from the rear deck instead of from the rear lower fascia.

The 004S will also spawn a track-focused CS variant. This 004CS will be a special version that owners will be able to swap between road and race configurations. This means it can be driven on the road but with a few simple modifications can become a homologated race car.

The 004S is priced from $460,000 and will come with General Motors’ LT4 6.2-liter supercharged V-8, rated at 650 hp and mated to a 6-speed manual with a gated shifter (the race car runs a modified version of the LT4). Stretch a little for the 004CS, which starts at $598,000, and you’ll get GM’s LT5 6.2-liter supercharged V-8 good for 850 hp. In this case there’s also a 7-speed sequential transmission with paddle shifters. Ordering exposed carbon fiber is a $70,000 premium on both.

In parallel with racing the 004C and developing the 004S and 004CS, Glickenhaus is developing the 007 race car for the new Le Mans Hypercar class of the World Endurance Championship. The 007 missed this month’s opening round of the WEC but will be ready for the next race at Portugal’s Portimao, scheduled for June 13. Taking turns driving will be Ryan Briscoe, Romain Dumas and Richard Westbrook.

A road-going version of the 007 racer is also planned, though production will only happen should Glickenhaus receive firm orders for each of a planned 24-car run. This one will come with 1,400 hp and a price tag of $2.3 million.

2021 Hennessey Mammoth 1000 is a 1,000-plus-hp Ram 1500 TRX, and it’s ready to hit the plains

The 2021 Ram 1500 TRX is a vehicle that’s hardly lacking in performance, but that’s never stopped the folks at Hennessey Performance Engineering from turning up the volume.

Hennessey in January announced a turnkey version that sees the super truck’s output dialed to a staggering 1,012 horsepower and 969 pound-feet of torque, and on Wednesday the first 20 examples were shown off at the company’s plant in Sealy, Texas.

With so much oomph, Hennessey estimates its modified 1500 TRX, aptly named the Mammoth 1000 TRX, will rocket to 60 mph from rest in 3.2 seconds and pass the quarter-mile in 11.4 seconds at over 120 mph. Remember, this is a full-size, off-road-rated truck we’re talking about.

In comparison, the stock 1500 TRX comes with 702 hp and 650 lb and, according to Ram, will accelerate from 0-60 mph in 4.5 seconds and run the quarter-mile in 12.9 seconds. Sure that is potent, but Ford is working on a new V-8-powered F-150 Raptor R for 2022 that’s rumored to come with the 760-hp supercharged V-8 of the Mustang Shelby GT500. In other words, any 1500 TRX owner planning to visit the drag strip may want to consider some of Hennessey’s upgrades.

For the Mammoth 1000 TRX, the list of upgrades include a custom 2.65-liter supercharger for the Hellcat 6.2-liter V-8, plus pulley upgrades, a high-flow intake, stainless-steel headers, high-flow exhaust piping (including the catalytic converter), and recalibrated engine management. The 1500 TRX’s 8-speed automatic and four-wheel-drive system also form part of the package.

Also included in the standard package is Hennessey’s Stage 1 off-road package. This adds, among other items, a custom front bumper with LED lights, custom 20-inch wheels with 35-inch off-road tires, a lift kit and a front suspension leveling kit. For serious off-roaders, there’s a Stage 2 package that adds all of the goodies of the Stage 1 package along with 37-inch off-road tires and electronic fold-out steps.

Naturally, the vehicle is also tested on the dyno to make sure its delivering the promised power reliably and consistently. A 2-year/24,000-mile limited warranty is included.

Pricing for the Mammoth 1000 TRX starts at $135,350, and Hennessey plans to build just 200 of them for 2021. More than half of the build slots have already been claimed. Orders can be placed through Hennessey or at select Ram dealers.

Hennessey is also offering up an SUV conversion with third-row seats. This model is limited to 20 units, each priced from $375,000. All prices mentioned include the $71,890 cost of the donor 1500 TRX.

Ferrari 296 GTB revealed with 818 hp from a V-6 hybrid powertrain

Talk of a modern Ferrari powered by a V-6 dates back more than a decade, but the Italian automaker finally unveiled one on Thursday in the form of the new 296 GTB.

The latest entry follows in a long line of mid-engine cars from Ferrari, and brings to the table a plug-in hybrid powertrain comprising a 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged V-6 with a wide 120-degree “vee” angle as the internal-combustion component. The wide angle helps create a lower center of gravity while providing adequate space for the turbos to be mounted above.

The V-6 revs to 8,500 rpm and is mated to an 8-speed dual-clutch transmission, and sandwiched between these two units is a single electric motor. The engine generates 654 hp on its own while the electric motor adds 164 hp to bring the total to 818 hp. Peak torque is 545 lb-ft and drive is the rear wheels only.

The setup is different to the one in the SF90 Stradale which has a V-8 instead of a V-6, along with two additional electric motors at the front axle. However, the 296, like the SF90, can also drive on electric power alone. A small 7.45-kilowatt-hour battery makes an electric range of about 15 miles possible.

Such a setup is similar to the one in the rival McLaren Artura, though in the Artura, you’re only looking at 671 hp and 531 lb-ft of torque, which means the Ferrari is probably quite a bit quicker. Claimed performance specs include 0-62 mph acceleration in 2.9 seconds, a top speed of over 205 mph, and a Fiorano lap time of 1:21. That makes it quicker than even the 488 Pista.

With the lower cylinder count, Ferrari has managed to reduce the wheelbase compared to mid-engine V-8 models by about 50 millimeters. The engine is also naturally lighter, with Ferrari quoting a dry weight of about 3,240 pounds.

For buyers looking to reduce weight further, there’s the Assetto Fiorano package which saves about 33 pounds thanks to lighter door panels, carbon fiber pieces, and a Lexan rear windscreen. It also adds adjustable Multimatic shocks, additional aero elements, and Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 R tires.

The interior follows a similar theme to the SF90, right down to the controls for the transmission which resemble the gated manual design of classic Ferraris. Greeting the driver is a digital instrument cluster while the passenger gets their own speed display.

The 296 GTB, the name coming from the specific 2,992-cc displacement and 6-cylinder configuration of the V-6, as well as Ferrari’s Gran Turismo Berlinetta designation, serves as the replacement for the F8 Tributo in the Prancing Horse’s lineup, as opposed to a new entry-level mid-engine car as had been rumored. This means it will likely be priced similar to the F8 which starts at about $277,000.

German tuner Techart has unveiled a new generation of its GT Street R based on the 992 Porsche 911 Turbo—20 years after the arrival of the 996-based original.

Porsche’s 911 Turbo and 911 Turbo S offer plenty of performance straight out of the box. Much more than the average buyer will ever need, in fact. Nevertheless, there are always those buyers that want more, and that’s where companies like Techart step in.

Techart, located close to Porsche’s hometown of Stuttgart, has been making Porsches go faster for more than three decades, and the company’s GT Street R and more hardcore GT Street RS are the most widely recognized products in the portfolio.

The new GT Street R starts with either the 911 Turbo or spicier Turbo S, with the upgrades aimed at delivering a sharper, more emotional car. They start with a substantial boost in output from the 3.8-liter twin-turbocharged flat-6 to 800 hp and 700 lb-ft of torque, made possible via new turbochargers, engine management, and exhaust. If this is too extreme, Techart also has a Stage 1 upgrade that lifts output to 700 hp and 664 lb-ft.

The new figures compare to 572 hp and 553 lb-ft for the stock Turbo and 640 hp and 590 lb-ft for the stock Turbo S.

With 800 hp on tap, Techart quotes a top speed of 217 mph, or 12 mph more than the top speed of the Turbo S.

The car features more aggressive fascias front and rear, plus a huge rear spoiler made from carbon fiber that makes the swan-neck design on the latest 911 GT3 look modest in comparison. You’ll notice in some of the shots the wing has its own integrated wing that can be extended for extra downforce. Techart quotes fours times the downforce at the rear axle of the stock Turbo at around 87 mph.

Techart has also added pumped fenders up front, which feature vents similar to the design used on the 991 911 GT3 RS. The extra-wide fenders have allowed Techart to fit wider wheels designed to fit 265/35 tires up front and 325/30 at the rear. They feature a center-lock design and are available in 20- and 21-inch diameters. The odd-looking wheel covers, known as aero discs, are there to improve aerodynamic properties and are made from carbon fiber.

The GT Street R also rides lower thanks to a new coil-over suspension setup that can drop the ride height by up to 25 millimeters. A more aggressive suspension setup for serious track enthusiasts is still being developed. It will be offered as part of a Clubsport Package that will also include a roll cage and seats with better bolstering.

The interior is refined with a mix of Alcantara, carbon fiber, and leather, and can be further enhanced with some heritage-inspired materials. This extends to the custom steering wheel which can be ordered with a checkered flag design and accent colors of the customer’s choosing.

Pricing for the GT Street R upgrade starts at 73,000 euros (approximately $87,100) and just 87 examples will be offered, the number marking the founding of Techart in 1987.

While the company tends to focus on performance tuning, it can also dial up the luxury of your Porsche. Case in point is the company’s recent work on the Porsche Panamera Sport Turismo.
